On September 15, 2015, the official name for a new professional soccer team in Los Angeles was announced: Los Angeles Football Club. They would become a new addition to the United State’s national soccer league, Major League Soccer. They planned to build their stadium in Exposition Park, right next to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This would put them in the heart of the city. This was an immense improvement for many fans, as the stadium of the other team in Los Angeles (LA Galaxy) was located many miles away in Carson.
After signing a coach, players, creating their jerseys and breaking ground on their new stadium, the club played its first official game on the fourth of March, 2018. They faced off against the Seattle Sounders away from home and pulled off a win thanks to a goal from Diego Rossi in the 11th minute.
However, the team had yet to play a game in their home stadium and would have to wait until the end of April. When the day arrived, all the anticipation and hard work put into this club finally became a reality. The stadium was packed and the fans were ready.
Playing against the Seattle Sounders again, LAFC knew that they would come into the game wanting revenge from the past 1-0 defeat. The game played out slowly, with chances being created from both sides. The clock ticked down until it seemed just about over. The score was 0-0 with only a few minutes to spare, and everyone was ready to leave their seats. But in the final minute of the game, LAFC were given a free kick after Seattle caused a foul. With the ball sitting well over twenty yards away from the goal, defender, Laurent Ciman, stepped up to take it. He blasted a powerful shot straight at the goalkeeper, who then reached his arms down to grab it. In that split second, it seemed as though a tie was definite. Yet, as the ball hit the keeper’s hands, it had enough force to ricochet off them, straight into the back of the net. The entire team, stadium, and city erupted. LAFC had just won their first ever game at home in the final minute.
However, this is only the beginning for the new club. With an amazing coach, incredible players, and an ever-growing base, who knows how much LAFC can achieve in the Major League Soccer.
